Lock the Door

Once upon a time, folks left doors unlocked, and didn’t have to worry about it. I know my grandmother did back when she lived in Dexter, NM. However, that was over 50 years ago. We live in a different world today, and in the interest of personal safety, locking doors behind you is a good habit to develop.

That includes your car door. Just after everyone you expect to be in the car has climbed in, you should lock the doors. Before you even put the key in the ignition. Make it a habit. A locked car door won’t completely stop some lowlife who is trying to attack you, but it will slow the perp down — perhaps enough so that you can draw your weapon and stop the attack.

At home, develop the habit of immediately closing and locking the door behind you whenever you enter your house. In my case, I typically enter through my garage, so I put the garage door down before I go in.

Well, at least most of the time. That ends up being inconvenient if I’m unloading groceries, but I do try to minimize the time I leave that garage door up without me being in or near the garage. That’s still a window of opportunity for some lowlife to sneak in.

I also find it a little hard to consistently remember to lock my car door first thing, but I’m working on it.

Safety is a habit.
