This course is the state required prerequisite for applying for a Texas Concealed Handgun License (called a CCW, or Concealed Carry Weapons license in some states). The course includes classroom coverage of the CHL laws, the required shooting test in an indoor range, and all of the required paperwork. This is a 10-hour course as required by state law. This course does NOT teach you how to shoot. Students with little or no handgun experience are strongly encouraged to take the NRA Basic Pistol Course prior to the CHL course, because the NRA Basic Pistol course will prepare you to pass the CHL range test with a high score on the first try.
Texas 10-hour CHL course Fee: $115
Texas 4-hour CHL Renewal course Fee: $60
Class Sign-up and Schedule
CHL Course Fee Includes:
- Light Lunch (except for renewal students)
- 2 Passport photos (not required for renewals)
- Classroom instruction
- Range qualification
- I encourage all my students to qualify with semi-auto (SA), so that they will not have the revolver-only (NSA) carry restriction.
- If you don’t pass the range test on the first try, you can retake it. Re-test is an extra $10 fee plus ammo if renting ($45 if not taken on the same day), not including extra ammo. If you have any doubts about your ability to pass the range test on the first try, I recommend that you take the NRA Basic Pistol Course before taking the CHL range test.
CHL Course Fee Does NOT Include:
- Ammunition (50 rounds minimum. Bring 100 if you can find that much.)
- Texas state CHL application fees (see the list of fees on the TDPS website)
- Handgun rental, unless otherwise listed in a special class. If needed, handguns may be rented at the range. Rental handgun includes range-provided ammunition. If you plan to rent a handgun, bring cash (exact change appreciated) for rental. The current price (fluctuates due to ammo prices) will be in the class details reminder email I send a few days before class.
